A QUIET LAND OF BEAUTY…

POLAND

POLAND HAS BECOME MY BELOVED ADOPTED COUNTRY SINCE MARRYING A POLISH WOMAN IN 2017 AND RECENTLY SETTLING DOWN HERE. OUR ANNUAL VISITS TO REUNITE WITH FAMILY AMIDST OUR EXTENSIVE TRAVELS TO SOUTH AMERICA HAVE OFFERED ME PROFOUND INSIGHTS INTO THIS NATION STEEPED IN RICH CULTURAL HERITAGE. WITH EACH VISIT, I’VE IMMERSED MYSELF IN THE VIBRANT TAPESTRY OF POLISH TRADITIONS, EMBRACING ITS LANGUAGE, CUISINE AND CUSTOMS. YET, IT’S THE COUNTRY’S UNTAMED NATURAL BEAUTY THAT CONTINUES TO CAPTIVATE ME. POLAND’S LANDSCAPES REMAIN LARGELY UNEXPLORED, RETAINING AN AURA OF MYSTERY AND ALLURE, HIDDEN GEMS AWAITING DISCOVERY BY THE CURIOUS ADVENTURER.

THE QUIET BEAUTY OF POLAND

THE QUIET BEAUTY OF POLAND

My ongoing photography project, titled “The Quiet Beauty of Poland”, delves into capturing the serene charm and understated splendor of this captivating country. Poland, a land often overshadowed by more renowned destinations, harbors a wealth of overlooked gems waiting to be discovered. Unlike countries boasting famous natural wonders, Poland’s allure lies in its unassuming light and atmospheric weather conditions which paint scenes of unparalleled beauty, casting a magical glow upon the landscape.

POLISH HIGHLANDERS

POLISH HIGHLANDERS

Proud and passionate highlanders play the traditional folk music of their region in the Beskidy mountains in Southern Poland. They play a big variety of instruments (bagpipes, violin, accordion, flutes…) and they like to go high in the mountains to play together at sunset.

ZYWIECKIE GODY

ZYWIECKIE GODY

Żywieckie Gody is a series of events taking place at the beginning of the year in Żywiec and Milówka (south of Poland). The most spectacular are the colorful costume processions, where “Jukace” from Żywiec and villages near Żywiec march side by side. Presentations of old people’s groups and a whip cracking competition are also integral elements of these carnivals.

JUKACE

JUKACE

I recently stumbled upon a funny carnival in Poland. It was right after the New Year’s Eve. The tradition wants that the “Jukace” walk in the city and whip the ground to chase the evil spirits. They wear homemade costumes that I found pretty hilarious and scary at the same time…

KOLEDA

KOLEDA

Every year during Christmas time, we go door to door to play music and sing carols for our friends and neighbors till late at night. We’re all dressed as we want, which adds some extra fun to it. The hospitality and the overall atmosphere is just incredible during these times. As you can see, children participate from a very young age…

PARAFIADA

PARAFIADA

I recently participated in a “Parafiada” in Poland. That’s a religious and cultural event organized by a parish.
This very morning, before going there, I was quite in a rush and I couldn’t find my 35mm lens, which I’m really used to.
I said, damn it! Let’s take the 50, and we’ll see.
At the beginning, I couldn’t get used to this focal length. I felt I was always way too close. But little by little, I managed to adapt.
The Parafiada itself was culturally so interesting. In addition to the mass and a procession, a group of folk musicians and dancers from the Polish mountains played in the church and on a stage.
What was happening around this event in the streets was also very interesting from a sociological point of vue.
